Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (also known as DLT) has established a particularly effective and reliable therapy principle for the management of lymphoedema. DLT consists of two phases:
- Phase I is devoted to mainly oedema removal
- Phase II is maintaining and further improving the treatment outcome
Both phases of DLT consist of four elements. All these elements make their particular contribution and can only be fully effective if applied together.
The four elements of DLT are:
- Skin Care
- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
- Compression Therapy
- Exercise Therapy
Compression therapy assists the tissue by applying pressure from outside, which helps the fluid to flow back into the lymph vessels and veins. Depending on the severity of lymphoedema, different degrees of pressure are needed for this purpose.
