Musgrove Park Hospital and Zanzibar Link Programme
Gary Clasby and a team of A&E professionals from Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, visited Zanzibar in November 2013 for two weeks supporting the Somerset and Zanzibar Link programme. This initiative was developed to support developing countries that lack medical structure and resource, with the aim to deliver education to local clinics and supply much needed product.
Zanzibar is situated off the East Coast of Africa and with a population of just under 1 million, life expectancy is just 57 years old and 1 in 3 people are estimated to be affected by malnutrition.
Salim Ali (Cast Technician at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital) and his team of three, deliver Orthopaedic services to the island. They run Clubfoot Outreach Camps and during these visits in 2013, a total number of 53 children with congenital malformation were seen. Of these, 19 children had congenital clubfoot, 5 neglected clubfoot and 29 had a variety of other medical conditions.
In Zanzibar casting products are increasingly needed to support paediatric services and a growing number of amputee’s. Gypsona and Jersey Stockinette were welcome contributions to local supplies.
Salim said “Thank you, Gypsona plaster of Paris is the best material to meet my needs but I struggle to get it. I usually have to make do with a substandard alternative”.
Gary Clasby and colleagues from Musgrove Park Hospital are planning further trips to support the Somerset and Zanzibar Link programme.
